The CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is a widely adopted system by which to outline language ability for numerous languages, including German. It is set out in six levels, distributed among three major categories:

Every level comprises descriptions of listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills. Most language tests and courses, e.g., Goethe-Institut exams or TELC, tie their certificates to these levels.
